In this article, you will learn how to set up and use your credit card reader to begin processing payments with Workiz Pay.
Credit card readers are essential to growing field service businesses looking to modernize their practices, allowing you to offer your customers a convenient way to pay for your top-notch services. Instead of manually entering a client's card details, you can use a card reader charge them by simply swiping, inserting, tapping the card.
Card readers are only available to users in the US and Canada.
Preparing your credit card reader for setup
Before beginning the setup process, please ensure the following:

Your card reader is fully charged
Make sure you charge your device for two hours before initial use.
You can check the battery life by pressing the power button on the side of the device. A full battery will be indicated by four green lights on the front of the device.

Your mobile device has Bluetooth enabled
While Bluetooth must be enabled on your device’s internal settings, this setup process involves connecting the reader using the Workiz app, not your mobile device’s internal settings. -
You have a valid business address and phone number listed on your account
Workiz requires a valid business address and phone number listed under your account settings in order to register a reader location. To verify you have saved this information on your account, please open your Account settings page.
Setting up your credit card reader
Setup steps vary depending on your Workiz Pay version and which card reader you're using.
New Workiz Pay: NYC1
Before you set up your card reader using the instructions in this section, please confirm that your card reader looks like the one presented below. If not, continue to the next section.
Requirements for setting up NYC1 card reader on iPhone
Before connecting your NYC1 card reader, there's one extra step required for iPhone users.
If your team uses iPhones, an admin must first activate Tap to Pay on iPhone in the Workiz mobile app. This only needs to be done once — once an admin activates it, every team member using an iPhone will be able to use Tap to Pay and connect their NYC1 card reader. The NYC1 reader will not function on iPhone until this is enabled.
Setup order for iPhone:
- Activate Tap to Pay on iPhone
- Connect your NYC1 card reader using the steps below
If you're setting up your NYC1 reader on Android, this step doesn't apply — go straight to the connection steps below.
- Power card reader on by pressing the power button on the device
- Open the Workiz app on your mobile device
- Select the bars icon () > Settings

Under Card readers, select Connect
- Place the card reader near your mobile device
- Select Continue
- Select Enable
- For Bluetooth access, select OK to allow

For Location access, select Always allow (or similar)
Precise location is required to process payments securely (otherwise payments will be declined).
- Find the card reader you want to pair and select Connect

Allow the Workiz app to connect to the card reader
Do NOT kill the app during this process.
Old Workiz Pay: Stripe Reader M2 or Wisepad 3
Before you set up your card reader using the instructions in this section, please confirm that your card reader looks like the one presented below. If not, revert to the previous section.
- Power card reader on by pressing the power button on the device
- Open the Workiz app on your mobile device
- Select the bars icon () > Settings

Under Card readers, select Connect
- Place the card reader near your mobile device
- Select Continue
- Select Enable
- For Bluetooth access, select OK to allow

For Location access, select Always allow (or similar)
Precise location is required to process payments securely (otherwise payments will be declined).

Find the card reader you want to pair and select Connect
- US card readers: The LED light will shift back and forth until a connection is made.
- Canada card readers: You may be required to verify a 6-digit passcode on your mobile device and reader to complete the pairing process.
- If you have multiple card readers, you can find the serial number on the back of the reader.

Allow the Workiz app to connect to the card reader
Do NOT kill the app during this process.
