Enabling on-demand billing for Genius Marketing

  • Updated

In this article, you will learn how on-demand billing works for Genius Marketing and how to turn it on so your email and text campaigns keep sending after you reach your plan's limits.

Genius Marketing includes a monthly allowance of emails and texts. Most businesses never hit these limits. But if you're running a large blast or several automated campaigns at once, on-demand billing makes sure your campaigns don't stop partway through — any extra messages are simply charged to your on-demand balance.

Here, we will cover how your email and text limits work, how to turn on on-demand billing, and how to keep an eye on your usage.

How Genius Marketing limits work

Emails

Accounts with the paid Genius Marketing add-on include 5,000 emails per month. Your allowance resets every month on your billing cycle date.

  • On-demand off: Email sending pauses once you've used your 5,000 emails for the month. Sending picks back up when your allowance resets.
  • On-demand on: Emails beyond your allowance keep sending and are billed per email, deducted from your on-demand balance.

This limit only applies to emails sent through Genius Marketing campaigns. Other emails sent from Workiz, such as automations and emails you send manually, are not affected.

Texts

Texts sent through Genius Marketing use provided text messages monthly, without requiring a Workiz Phone plan. Before you send a text campaign, Workiz calculates how many texts it needs. If your provided limit or existing phone plan doesn't have enough left, you'll be asked to turn on on-demand charges or upgrade your phone plan.

You don't need a Workiz Phone plan to send texts with Genius Marketing, but without one, every text past your allotted limit is billed on-demand. Because on-demand rates are higher per message than a dedicated plan, a phone plan is usually the most cost-effective option if you text regularly.

To send text campaigns, you also need a Workiz phone number and an approved A2P 10DLC registration. To learn more, please see this article.

Including an emoji in a text message makes it count as more segments than a text-only message, so it uses up your plan faster. If you're close to your limit, consider leaving emojis out of large text campaigns.

Turning on on-demand billing

You can turn on on-demand billing ahead of time from your billing page, or when Workiz prompts you while sending a campaign.

Turning on on-demand billing may charge your card on file to add funds to your on-demand balance. After that, your balance is recharged automatically based on your on-demand settings.

Two-factor authentication is required to change on-demand settings. To learn more about setting up 2FA in Workiz, please see this article.

From your billing page

  1. Select your profile icon in the top navigation, then select Billing
  2. Select the Usage tab
  3. Turn on Genius Marketing Emails to cover emails beyond your 5,000 monthly allowance, and/or On-demand charges to cover texts (and calls) beyond your phone plan
  4. If this is your first time setting up on-demand, enter the balance amount that triggers an automatic recharge and the dollar amount to add when that happens
  5. Enter the one-time passcode sent to your phone, if prompted
  6. Select Save

While sending a campaign

If on-demand is off and a campaign would go over your remaining allowance, Workiz will let you know before anything is sent. This applies to both blast and automated campaigns.

  1. When the on-demand prompt appears, turn on the On-demand toggle
  2. Enter the one-time passcode sent to your phone, if prompted
  3. Select Save & send

Your campaign will send to your selected audience, and any messages beyond your allowance will be charged to your on-demand balance.

If you'd rather not turn on on-demand, you can close the prompt and either narrow your audience or wait until your allowance resets. To learn more about narrowing your audience, please see this article.

Tracking your usage and charges

You can check how many emails you've sent and what you've been charged at any time.

  1. Select your profile icon, then select Billing
  2. Select the Usage tab
  3. Find the Genius Marketing Emails row

Here you'll see:

  • Emails used and remaining for the current month
  • Emails sent beyond your allowance
  • Your total on-demand charges for those emails

Text usage appears with your Workiz Phone plan usage on the same tab. Automatic recharges to your on-demand balance show up in your billing history as they happen.

If you're regularly going over your text allowance, upgrading your phone plan may cost less than paying on-demand rates. To compare plans, open the Phone plan tab on your billing page.

Turning off on-demand billing

You can turn off on-demand billing at any time by following the same steps above and turning off the toggle. Once it's off:

  • Genius Marketing emails pause when you reach your 5,000 monthly emails
  • Text campaigns can only send to as many clients as your phone plan has texts left

If you've already used your monthly allowance, active automated campaigns will stop sending emails until it resets, so check your live campaigns before turning it off.
