In this article, you will learn how to segment your audience for Genius Marketing campaigns using filters, filter segments, and AND/OR logic.
The best campaigns don't go to everyone — they go to the right someone. A "Get ready for summer" AC check lands a lot better with clients in hot zip codes who haven't had a tune-up this year than it does with your entire client list. With Genius Marketing's audience filters, you can narrow your campaign down to exactly the clients you want to reach, based on who they are and what they've done with your business.
Here, we will take a closer look at every available filter, how to combine filters with AND/OR logic, how to build more advanced audiences with filter segments, and how to remove individual clients from a campaign.
Where to find audience filters
Audience filters are found in the Audience section of a Blast campaign.
- From the sidebar menu, select Marketing
- Open an existing campaign, or select Create campaign to start a new one
- Expand the Audience section
For workflow campaigns, you'll find the same filters on the Entry Point step of the workflow canvas. To learn more about workflow campaigns, please see this article.
Filters are split into two groups:
- Filter by client details: Information stored on the client's profile, like their city, tags, or total spend
- Filter by client activities: What the client has done with your business, like their last job date, open estimates, or last email click
As you add filters, the Estimated reach banner updates in real time to show how many clients match your criteria.

Looking for a specific filter? Start typing in the Search bar at the top of the filter list to find it quickly.
Adding filters to your audience
- In the Audience section, select Add filter under Filter by client details or Filter by client activities
- Select the filter you want to use (e.g., City)
- Choose a condition (e.g., equals to) and enter or select a value (e.g., San Diego)
- Select Apply
- Repeat Steps 1-4 to add more filters
- Select Save
The conditions you can choose from depend on the filter. For example, text filters like City let you choose contains, does not contain, equals to, or is not equal to, while list filters like Client Source let you choose is any of or is none of.
To edit a filter, select it and update the condition or value. To remove a filter, select the x next to it.
Combining filters with AND/OR logic
When you add more than one filter, Workiz connects them with AND by default. You can switch this to OR to change how strict your audience is.
| Logic | Who's included | Effect on your audience |
|---|---|---|
| AND | Clients who match every filter | Narrower, more targeted |
| OR | Clients who match at least one filter | Broader, reaches more clients |
City equals to San Diego AND Client Source is any of Google only includes San Diego clients who found you on Google. Switching to OR includes every San Diego client, plus every client who found you on Google — no matter where they live.
To switch between AND and OR:
- Select the AND label between two filters
- The label changes to OR and your Estimated reach updates
- Select it again to switch back to AND
Not sure which one you have set? Hover over the label to see a reminder of how it works.
Building advanced audiences with filter segments
Sometimes one set of filters isn't enough. Maybe you want to reach two completely different groups of clients with the same campaign — like clients in one zip code with an open estimate, or clients in another zip code who've had a job recently.
That's where filter segments come in. A segment is a group of filters that works together. You can add additional segments to your audience, then choose whether they're connected with AND or OR logic:
- OR between segments: Clients who match any one of your segments are included. Use this to combine different groups into one audience.
- AND between segments: Clients must match every segment to be included. Use this to layer extra requirements on top of your first segment.
Segment 1: Zip code equals to 92101 AND Has open estimate
OR
Segment 2: Zip code equals to 92103 AND Last job date is within the last 30 days
This audience includes clients in 92101 with an open estimate, plus clients in 92103 who had a job in the last 30 days — all in one campaign.
To add a filter segment:
- Set up your first segment using the steps in the Adding filters to your audience section above
- Select + Add Filter to add a new segment
- Select the AND/OR label between the segments to choose how they're combined
- Repeat Steps 2-3 to add more segments as needed
- Select Save
Keep an eye on your estimated reach. If the number drops to zero or jumps higher than expected, double-check the AND/OR logic between your filters and segments.
Removing individual clients from a campaign
Filters do most of the heavy lifting, but there may be a few clients you'd rather leave out — like a client who just called to book, or a test profile. You can remove them from your campaign one by one without changing your filters.
- In the Audience section, select View audience list in the Estimated reach banner
- In the Audience Preview window, find the client you want to remove
- Select the trash can icon in the Remove clients column
- Repeat Step 3 for any other clients you want to remove
- Select Close
- Select Save
Removed clients appear in a new Excluded clients section of your audience (e.g., 1 client excluded), and your Estimated reach updates to match.
Changed your mind? Select the x next to the excluded clients chip to add them back to your campaign.
