Understanding your commissions reports (new)

  • Updated

This feature is currently only available to select users and accounts as part of a limited release. Access will be rolled out gradually over time.

In this article, you will learn how to use the commissions reports built into Workiz — where to find them, what each report shows, when to use it, and how to make it work for your business.

What are commissions reports?

Every time a Performance Pay commission rule applies to a job in Workiz, that commission is recorded for the team member who earned it. Commissions reports pull that information together so you can see what your team has earned, which jobs and rules generated it, and how commissions are trending over time.

These reports are built on the same customizable reporting engine as your other new reports, so you can filter, group, and reshape them to answer your own questions instead of being stuck with one fixed layout.

For example:

  • "How much commission has my team earned this month?"
  • "How much does each team member have coming to them?"
  • "Which commission rules are paying out the most?"
  • "How have commissions changed over the past year?"

Workiz has three ready-to-use commissions reports that answer these kinds of questions right out of the box. Each one opens as a live report, pre-configured with a sensible starting filter and layout — you're not looking at a static preview.

Where to find your commissions reports

  1. From the left-side navigation panel, go to Reports
  2. Search for "commission," or select the Commissions category from the left-hand list of categories
  3. Select one of the three report templates to open it

How commissions reports work

Every commissions report in Workiz is built on the same foundation, which means they all work the same way. Each report shows you a list of commissions, and you can shape what that list looks like using three tools:

Filters

Filters let you narrow down which commissions appear in the report. Select + Add filter to narrow the report further, or select an existing filter chip (such as Job End Date is This month) to change the date range. If you do not set a filter, the report shows all commissions.

Grouping

Grouping rolls your commissions up into categories so you can see totals at a glance. Use the Group by dropdown to roll rows up by a different field, such as User or Job End Date – Month. Select the X on an existing grouping to go back to one row per commission.

Visible columns

Each report comes with a default set of columns — the pieces of information shown for each commission. Select Fields to add or remove columns depending on what you want to see.

You can also select Export as to download any report as a PDF or CSV.

Each of the reports below comes pre-configured with sensible defaults for filters, grouping, and columns. You can use them as-is or adjust them on the fly.

Your default commissions reports

Workiz includes three pre-built commissions reports. Here is what each one does and when you might use it.

This months commissions

This report lists every individual commission earned this month, with one row per job, per commission rule that applied to it. It is the best place to start when you want to review exactly how each commission was earned.

Good for

  • Reviewing individual commission payouts
  • Checking which rules applied to a job
  • Exporting commission data
Setting Default
Default filters Job End Date: This month
Default columns
  • Job #
  • Client
  • Job Type
  • User
  • Job Total
  • Rate
  • Commission
  • Rule
  • Triggered By
Default grouping None — one row per commission

A single job can appear more than once if more than one commission rule applied to it.

Commission by user

This report shows this month's commissions totaled per team member, with one row per user. It uses the same filter as This months commissions, but groups by user instead of listing every individual commission line.

Good for

  • Calculating monthly commission payouts
  • Comparing earnings across your team
Setting Default
Default filters Job End Date: This month
Default columns
  • User
  • Commissions
  • Commission (sum)
  • Rate (avg)
  • Tip (sum)
  • Job Total (sum)
Default grouping User

Commissions per month

This report shows commission totals for each of the last twelve months, with one row per month, so you can see trends over time instead of a single period.

Good for

  • Tracking commission trends
  • Spotting seasonal patterns
  • Budgeting for payroll
Setting Default
Default filters Job End Date: Last 12 months
Default columns
  • Job End Date (month)
  • Commissions
  • Commission (sum)
  • Rate (avg)
  • Tip (sum)
  • Job Total (sum)
Default grouping Job End Date — grouped by month

Understanding the columns

Commission columns

When a report isn't grouped (like This months commissions), it shows one row for every commission triggered on a job:

Column What it shows
Job # The job the commission was earned on. Selecting it opens that job.
Client The client tied to the job.
Job Type The job type assigned to the job.
User The team member who earned this commission.
Job Total The total value of the job. Because a job can generate more than one commission row, this same total repeats across every row for that job.
Rate The rate used to calculate this commission: either a percentage of the applicable amount (for example, 10.00%) or a flat dollar amount (for example, $100.00), depending on how the commission rule is set up.
Commission The dollar amount of the commission itself, calculated from the Rate.
Rule The name of the commission rule that triggered this payout (for example, Upsell commission or Standard commission). Selecting it opens that rule.
Triggered By Which role the team member played in triggering the commission: Sold by (added the relevant line item), Done by (assigned to/completed the job), or Created by (created the job).

Grouped columns

When you group by User or by Job End Date – Month, the individual rows roll up into summary columns instead:

Column What it shows
Commission (sum) The total commission earned across all rows in that group.
Rate (avg) The average Rate across all rows in that group.
Tip (sum) Total tips associated with that group's jobs.
Commissions The number of individual commission rows included in that group.
Job Total (sum) The combined job total across that group. Jobs with multiple commission rows are counted once per row, so this can add a job's total more than once — see Good to know below.

Good to know

A job can appear more than once

Because commissions are tracked per rule, a single job with several commission rules attached (say, one for the sale and one for completing the work) shows up as multiple rows in This months commissions. Keep this in mind if you're eyeballing totals. Use Commission by user or add your own grouping if you want a true per-job or per-person sum instead of counting rows.

These reports rely on your Performance Pay commission rules (not legacy commissions rules)

The reports themselves don't create or change commission structures set up in Performance Pay; they reflect whatever rules you've already set up. See Managing your commissions with Performance Pay if you need to create or adjust a rule.

Saving your own custom reports

Every report above is a great starting point, but your business is unique — and sometimes you need a report that is set up exactly the way you want it, every time.

Rather than adjusting filters or groupings every time you open a report, you can save your own version of any commissions report as a custom report. Once you've adjusted a report to show what you want, select Save as custom report and give it a name.

When you save a custom report, you can lock in:

  • The date range or filters you always use
  • Your preferred grouping (by user, by month, by rule, etc.)
  • The columns you want to see

Your saved version is added to My reports > Custom reports. The original pre-built reports stay untouched, so you can always go back to the default if you need to.
