Creating and managing item categories

In this article, you will learn how to create and manage item categories in Workiz.

Item categories are designed to help you organize the line items your business offers, giving you greater control and improved reporting. They play a vital role in helping you easily navigate your price book in Workiz, structuring your items and products in a way that makes it easy for you to find what you need.

Item categories should not be confused with item groups.

  • Item categories: Designed to improve organization that helps you more easily navigate your price book in Workiz.
  • Item groups: Designed to increase efficiency by allowing you to add multiple line items with just one click.

Creating an item category

  1. From the sidebar menu, select Price book
  2. Select the Item categories tab
  3. Select Create new
  4. Create your item category

    1. (Optional) Category image
    2. Category name
    3. (Optional) Parent category
    4. (Optional) Category description
    5. Select Save

Item categories can also be created from the Categories tab of your Inventory page.

Regardless of where the item category is created, it will become available for use across the platform for reusable line items and trackable inventory items.

Assigning items to categories

After creating a category, you can assign items to categories individually or in bulk.

Assigning an item to category can be done when creating the item or after it has been created.

Assigning items in bulk

You can also assign multiple items to a category at once using bulk actions.

You can also assign multiple items to a category at once using bulk actions. Go to your Items & products settings page and simply check the box for all of the items you want to assign to a specific category, and then select Change category.

Categories in price book

As mentioned, categories play a big role in simplifying the presentation of your items and products when using your price book in Workiz. Organizing items properly will make navigating things easier while on the job.

Understanding parent categories 

When creating item categories, you will have the option to set a parent category. Parent categories are great for adding more structure to your categories to improve navigation. When setting parent categories for your item categories, it’s important to understand how.

If Category A is set as the parent category to Category B, you will not be able to set Category B as the parent category to Category A.

Here's how you cannot structure your categories:
